The purpose and function of both Retaining walls and French drains

Retaining Walls

Purpose

A retaining wall is designed to hold back soil and prevent erosion or collapse of higher ground onto a certain area. This is especially necessary in areas with significant elevation changes, like hillsides or terraces.

 Functionality

Support for Vertical Grade ChangesIt provides lateral support for vertical or near-vertical grade changes, ensuring stability.

Erosion Control

Helps in preventing soil erosion and managing water runoff.

Aesthetic and Functional Landscaping

Creates level areas in sloped terrains, increasing usable space and enhancing landscape aesthetics.

 French drains

Purpose

A French drain is used to redirect surface water and groundwater away from specific areas. It's essential in preventing water accumulation and managing drainage in both residential and commercial landscapes.

 Functionality

Water Redirection

Channels water away from foundations, driveways, and other critical areas, preventing water damage.

Soil Drainage

Helps in draining excess water from saturated soils, thereby preventing waterlogging.

Reduction of Hydrostatic Pressure

By managing groundwater levels, it reduces hydrostatic pressure on retaining walls and foundations.

French drain failure

Do you have a French drain that isn't working properly, after the rain your yard still has standing water where your drain is installed?  Call us for a complimentary inspection. Many French drains are not properly installed and there Is no gradient so the water doesn't flow properly, it just sits in the pipe and slowly drains out. This causes temporary flooding until the water finally drains. Some have a collapsed pipe or pipe that is packed with mud so full that it can't drain at all. The pipe needs to be replaced. We can fix all of these issues for you.
